Scholarship scams are becoming more sophisticated and specifically target students under financial pressure. Please read this and share it with every student you know.
Red Flag 1: They Ask for Money Upfront
Legitimate scholarships NEVER ask for an application fee, processing fee, or any "administrative cost." If anyone asks you to pay money to apply or to "release" your scholarship - it is a scam. No exceptions.
Red Flag 2: "You Won a Scholarship You Never Applied For"
Getting a congratulations email for a scholarship you never applied to is always suspicious. Real scholarship programs do not find winners by cold email.
Red Flag 3: Unverifiable Organization
Always search the scholarship name plus "scam" or "review." Then check:
- Does the organization have a real website with real contact information?
- Is the domain newly registered? (Use a WHOIS tool to check)
- Can you find it mentioned on a government or accredited university website?
Red Flag 4: Urgency and Pressure
"You must accept within 24 hours!" and "Only 2 slots left!" are manipulation tactics. Real scholarships have published, fixed deadlines. They never rush you.
Red Flag 5: Requests for Sensitive Information Too Early
No scholarship program needs your bank account number, full passport, or national ID number at the application stage. Be extremely careful about what you share.
Red Flag 6: Poor Grammar and Unofficial Email Addresses
Scam emails often contain typos, unusual formatting, or come from free email services (Gmail, Yahoo) instead of official institutional domains.
How to Verify a Scholarship is Legitimate:
If You Suspect a Scam:
1. Do NOT send money, documents, or personal information
2. Report to your national cybercrime or consumer protection authority
3. Warn others - post in student groups, forums, and social media
4. Report to the platform where you found the scam
